Denzel @ BAMC

Denzel Washington at Brooks Army Medical Center - A true American and friend to all in uniform!

Don't know whether you heard about this but Denzel Washington and his family visited the troops at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas (BAMC) the other day. This is where soldiers who have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the United States, especially burn victims.

There are some buildings, there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a hotel where the soldiers' families can stay for little or no charge while their soldier is staying in the hospital. BAMC has quite a few of these houses on base, but as you can imagine, they are almost filled most of the time.

While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build. He took his checkbook out and wrote a check for the full amount right there on the spot.

The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts to hear it.

The question is, why do Brad Pitt, Madonna, Tom Cruise and other Hollywood fluff make front page news with their ridiculous antics and Denzel Washington's Patriotism doesn't even make page 3 in the Metro section of any newspaper except the local newspaper in San Antonio.

Lady Liberty

On this date 123 years ago, The Statue of Liberty, officially titled
Liberty Enlightening the World, was dedicated on October 28, 1886. Commemorating the centennial of the signing of the
United States Declaration of Independence.

It was given to the United States by the people of France to represent the friendship between the two countries established during the American Revolution. It represents a woman wearing a stola, a radiant crown and sandals, trampling a broken chain, carrying a torch in her raised right hand and a tabula ansata tablet, where the date of the Declaration of Independence JULY IV MDCCLXXVI is inscribed, in her left arm.

Standing on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, it welcomes visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans traveling by ship. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi sculpted the statue and obtained a U.S. patent for its structure. (Photo Credit: William Warby - November 13, 2007)

Maurice Koechlin, chief engineer of Gustave Eiffel's engineering company and designer of the Eiffel Tower, engineered the internal structure. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and adoption of the repoussé technique, where a malleable metal is hammered on the reverse side.

The statue is made of a sheathing of pure copper, hung on a framework of steel (originally puddled iron) with the exception of the flame of the torch, which is coated in gold leaf (originally made of copper and later altered to hold glass panes). It stands atop a rectangular stonework pedestal with a foundation in the shape of an irregular eleven-pointed star. The statue is 151 ft tall, but with the pedestal and foundation, it is 305 ft tall.

Worldwide, the Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable icons of the United States and was, from 1886 until the Jet Age, often one of the first glimpses of the United States for millions of immigrants after ocean voyages from Europe. The statue is the central part of Statue of Liberty National Monument, administered by the National Park Service.

LIFE With Jane

Just because she's such a beauty and a truly wonderful lady, I thought I would do a post on Jane Russell. You don't mind, DO YOU?

Jane Russell was born on June 21, 1921 as Ernestine Jane Geraldine Russell in Bemidji, Minnesota. She now lives in the Santa Maria Valley on the Central Coast of California.

In 1940, Russell was signed to a seven-year contract by film mogul Howard Hughes and made her motion picture debut in The Outlaw (1943), a story about Billy the Kid that went to great lengths to showcase her voluptuous figure.

Although the movie was completed in 1941, it was released for a limited showing two years later. There were problems with the censorship of the production code over the way her ample cleavage was displayed. When the movie was finally passed, it had a general release in 1946.

Together with Lana Turner and Rita Hayworth, Russell personified the sensuously contoured sweater girl look. Bob Hope once introducing her as "the two and only Jane Russell". The photo of her on a haystack glowering with sulky beauty and youthful sensuality was a popular pin-up with Service men during World War II.

Missing From Modern Auto Advertising: The Power of Illustration

In the longest of my several careers I was an advertising copywriter and, later, creative director, working mostly on car accounts. At the time we depended on photography to show the cars, as is the case today. I wouldn't have even considered illustrations. Now, older and slightly wiser, I've learned to appreciate how art could add a sense of romance and adventure to our concepts of an automobile. I respect the work of those long-ago illustrators and if I were a creative director today I'd explore the use of art, especially with the magic of computer
drawing programs. If nothing else, it would set the client's ads apart from today's look-alike and not very interesting print materials.

High Point Cruise-In

The cruise-in in High Point, North Carolina probably has the most diversed selection of collectable cars in the area, and on it's15th year has no signs of slowing down! The collectable cars range from muscle, modifies, early/late models, ratrods and newer vehicles. It was great to compare the differences and similarities of the 2010 Camaro and Challenger to the originals.

Click on the video below to catch a glimpse at a '71 Plymouth 340 Cuda bought NEW in 1971! This is a 340 Six Barrel Engine! Can you guess the value on this Mopar?

Check out this '61 Desoto (2 Door)! In 1961, only 911 2 door Desoto's were produced making this classic a keeper! Can you name other model cars with similar tail fins? This was one of my favorites at the show!

This is a remarkable Shelby G.T. 350! Take a look!

The High Point cruise-in is every Thursday from 5:00 to 9:00 pm located at 1628 S. Main Street! If you're eager to cruise in your classic on a sunny day during the colder months then you can cruise to High Point!

See you there!

Ratrod or Opel?

Click on the video below to get a sneak peak at this creative Ratrod! Notice the detail of the barb wire, and the lack of a radiator in the front of the vehicle! The Ratrod gives enthusiasts the ability to create a totally different automobile, and still considered a collector car to the owner. The creativity of this Ratrod makes it really cool!

The Opel has a stylish design, and only in production from 1968 to 1973. This '73 Opel GT is a perfect example! Take a close look at the sleek steel unibody and the pop-up headlights, which are manually operated by a large lever along the center console next to the shifter. Gorgeous classic!

Which car is your favorite? Is it the creative Ratrod or stylish Opel GT? You decide! You can see both of these collectable cars at Brusters Ice-Cream on Wednesday nights in Mooresville, NC.

Toyota-Subaru RWD Coupes Reportedly Still on Track

subaru_rwd_coupe_rendering_new.jpg
Last week it was reported that the upcoming Toyota-Subaru (Toyobaru) rear-wheel-drive coupes had been put on hold. According to PR sources in Japan those reports are false and the coupes are still on track for a 2011 launch.

The joint collaboration between Toyota and Subaru is going to yield a coupe for each brand that will use a Subaru platform that will be converted to RWD. The car's will also feature Subaru's 2.0L boxer engine. The coupes will have different styling.

It was originally planned that the coupes would be built by Subaru at a new plant in Oizumi, but the current economic crisis mean that the cars will be built at Subaru's long-serving Gunma main plant.

2010 Saab 9-4X Spied In The Nude

Codenamed GMT168, the new Saab 9-4X is intended to kick off Saab’s highly anticipated aesthetic overhaul with its introduction in 2010. Until recently, photos of the 2010 Saab 9-4X were limited to heavily camouflaged spy shots, but Brenda Priddy and her team of espionage experts managed to score some stills of the new 9-4X showing some skin.

Check out the undressed 9-4X after jump

Engineered to be Saab’s first Crossover vehicle, the 2010 9-4X shares a platform with the Cadillac SRX and is intended to replace Saab’s current SUV offering, the 9-7X. Powered by a 2.0L turbocharged engine, spec sheets leaked from GM have the Saab 9-4X putting out a whopping 245-hp and 295 lb-ft of torque while still maintaining a healthy EPA average of 25 mpg city/37 mpg highway. In-house tests claim the 9-4X can accelerate from 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds, but I’d like to reserve final judgement on the matter until my hands are graced with a set of keys.

Concept Frankfurt: The New Mini Club Wagon

Just like the Chevy Cruze and the concept Chevy Orlando, Mini may be trying to capitalize on the re-emerging market of station wagon-esque rides. There are families out there that need a lot of space in their cars, and they want fuel efficiency just like the rest of us. My brother, for instance, has 6 kids and needs his SUV, but doesn’t want pay a small fortune to fill up the tank twice a day. So the market for lots of space + fuel economy is out there. That’s where this Concept Frankfurt fits.

Just like the old Mini Clubman, it features twin “barn doors” in the rear and a lengthened wheelbase. Check out the pictures:

Detroit 2009: Dodge Ram R/T Accessorized

Click above for a hi-res gallery of the Dodge Ram R/T

Stuck among the largely forgettable production vehicles at the Chrysler, LLC display is this Mopar-enhanced Ram R/T. Originally shown at SEMA, B5 Blue (we think) covers its bodywork, which is very close to the ground thanks to a new set of springs and shocks. Kumho-shod, 22-inch forged wheels are stuffed into the cutouts. In front, the Challenger-style hood rocks a set of SRT stripes, the headlamp housings are blacked out, and a new front bumper with chin spoiler threatens to scrape against any obstacle taller than a praying mantis. Out back, a body-colored bed cover thwarts prying eyes, and a pair of fat polished exhaust tips pokes under the rear bumper. Inside, you'll find color-keyed inserts and R/T embroidery on the seats. Overall, this thing looks pretty mean, especially when its surrounded with your garden variety Dakotas and Durangos.
